Cutbank's 40th anniversary anthology, Similar Peaks, Vlak, Tears in the Fence, Paris Lit Up: poems arriving soon in these great venues!

Tour de l'Europe icon in the bldg elevator
Fall is underway here in Mulhouse where the quiet of the streets is a radical change from bustling NYC, and the long days and nights are all about the silence of reflection and perspective--looking back over the summer and forward towards the academic year and many writing projects . The cool seems to have descended upon us all at once, too, as if a reminder that it is time to get to work. And it looks like many magazine editors are also hard at work, combing through their piles of summer submissions and making decisions. It is thus with great pleasure that my fall has begun with some exciting just out and forthcoming publication news: POEMS appearing in October, November and December

Forthcoming poems:  “After the Beheading” and “Apparition” will be in the new, online literary magazine Similar Peaks. headed by David Blumenshine and Rachel Burns alongside poetry editors Jessica Linde Hiestand and Carleen Tibbets.  They are still getting their website in order, but with a little work you can find  poems and images from their first issue, including exciting work by Dara Wier, Paige Taggart and others, as well as information in case you want to consider sending them your own work at: http://similarpeakspoetry.com/

“A Slim Box of Her” and “Take Cover” have been accepted for publication in Tears in the Fence, issue 58 due out in winter 2013/2014, Dorchester, UK. Edited for almost 30 years now by David Caddy, this print-only lit mag including poems from authors around the globe as well as a really hefty reviews and articles section in each issue has a fairly new website up and running at: http://tearsinthefence.com/. Feel free to help them keep going by purchasing back issues or subscribing to forthcoming issues via: http://tearsinthefence.com/pay-it-forward/

9 prose poems from the CERN 200 project I am working on (“CERN 13” “CERN 18-22” and “CERN 38-40”) as well as three prose poems from the chapbook Conversion (Estepa Editions, France) under the title “Making a Message of Things” will be appearing in Vlak, number 4, published by the Philosophy Faculty of Charles University in Prague (as well as sites in London, New York, Paris, Melbourne and Amsterdam). Vlak Magazine is edited by the team of Louis Armand, David Vichnar, Edmund Berrigan, Ali Alizadeh, Stephen J. Fowler, Olga Peková, Jane Lewty, and Stephen Mooney. They also publish eBooks and are partnered with the print book press: Equus Press. This issue will also include work by Vanessa Place, Alice Notley, Frederic Forte, Anselm Berrigan, Marjorie Welish and many other exciting poets that I am totally honored to be published with (see http://vlakmagazine.wordpress.com/2013/09/09/countdown-to-vlak-4/ for a list). The issue is forthcoming on October 8, 2013. To pre-order, to order back issues, or to learn more about VLAK, see V+L-A=K at: http://vlakmagazine.wordpress.com/ The publishers will be in Paris participating in readings on Oct 10th with Paris Lit Up and October 12 with a special Vlak event--where you can pick up YOUR copy of Vlak!

A prose poem “Battleships and Battalions” from the forthcoming chapbook Conversion (Estepa Editions, France) will appear in Paris Lit Up magazine's inaugural edition, volume one, issue 1, October 2013, edited by Helen Cusack O’Keeffe, Jason Francis Mc Gimsey, Kate Noakes and Julie Poole. For more news on this magazine, keep your eye on: http://parislitup.com/plu-magazine/ There will be a BIG LAUNCH EVENT on Oct 11th in Paris at POP IN with bands, authors and more! (and which I will be reading at as well).

New news and New York....

The great voyage to the BIG apple is soon to come to a close, and perhaps soon a few instances of or impressions of this city will be posted here. The arrival was frought with intimidation, with apprehension and the adrenaline of wanting to get over that and head out and wander. Now, I feel at ease here in Brooklyn, have gotten the hang of the buses and wandered up and down and around neighborhoods throughout Brooklyn and Manhattan. I have met so many amazing authors--people I have read for years, some I had been in contact, but also others I am just getting to know and whose works are and I imagine will open my perception of the world, the language, the cultures of here and also of where I live by opposition and comparison. The two week time count is ticking! But for today--a little set of city images from NYC and then some writing news:
Water towers here have their own poetry

Brooklyn traffic heading to the Manhattan Bridge

Looking up at the bridges, from the Brooklyn side

View out blurry bus window at sunset, all the colors askew heading from the Upper East side down to the East Village, Manhattan

The new tower, seen from its base down at WTC stop as I head to the PATH train

Jersey City, NJ--old theaters become new propaganda sources. Culture and religion at work.

The rainbow as propulsion device for the Barclay Center, Brooklyn
Atlantic Ave stop, Brooklyn

Seen from Brooklyn--there she is!

Looking over at Manhattan from a Brooklyn Park by 40th St

An Essay on the Essay on an Essay: a look at Susan Howe by JKDick now out in Seventeen Seconds issue 7

Susan Howe speaking at Univ Paris VII, Nov 2009, by Jennifer K Dick
ANNOUNCING FREE ONLINE the newest issue of "SEVENTEEN SECONDS: a journal of poetry and poetics" This issue of a fabulous Canadian magazine, Seventeen Seconds #7 includes my reflection on Susan Howe's essay on Chris Marker (with her really interesting reflections on Vertov, Tarkovsky, poetry and of course life in general). Here is a what issue 7 contains:

Victor Coleman
         from Miserable Singers

Jennifer K Dick
Invisible Collisions: Considering Susan Howe's Reform of the Poetic, Critical and Autobiographical Essay

Nicole Markotić
ds / junct: in/accessible poetry & the problem body

Gil McElroy
         Chance and necessity
                        (originally presented at VERSeFest 2013)

rob mclennan
Some notes on Mark Truscott's Form: A Series

Sandra Ridley
         Testamonium

"seventeen seconds: a journal of poetry and poetics comes out as the natural extension of
Still from Chris Marker's La Jetée
the eight issues of Poetics.ca edited by rob mclennan and Stephen Brockwell. Highlighting the diversity of voice, style, practice and politic, seventeen seconds continues the resolve to provide a forum for dialogue on contemporary poetics, with a focus on Canadian writing. Over the past two decades, the amount of critical writing published in print literary journals on Canadian poetry, specifically, seems to have decreased dramatically, but slowly returned through a number of online journals. seventeen seconds simply wishes to help strengthen the dialogue and the ongoing conversation about writing through publishing new writing, and conversation about new writing. How else are we supposed to learn anything, unless we keep talking?"--

Readings Readings step right up--the 24th and 29th June 2013 plus new poetics publications

Bhopal's Flowers playing in Mulhouse, Pl de la Réunion
The end of June is nigh, we did our fête de la musique to officially ring in summer on the solstice (photo Mulhouse, center stage, with the Bhopal's Flowers lead singer up their strummin and hummin for us!) and yet the summer is not yet so very summery. It is like being up in the North Woods on some Canadian lake with a strong, cool breeze but also some nice, clear days with afternoons that are reminiscent of Hemingway's Nick Adams stories. And much is underway. First--for anyone in Paris, please come out and see me this week if you have the time! I am reading twice and attending many other readings and vernissages this week.

IVY WRITERS exciting event for Color Treasury--June 24th at 19h30: Color Treasury is a small artbook press based in Texas and Paris here to read from work and launch new works. Authors who are part of the initial newspaper-style magazine COLOR TREASURY 003 will be reading at this event, as will art chapbook Paris-based author Jonathan Regier (for COLOR TREASURY 002) and NY author who works for New Directions and NY Book Review, Jeffrey Yang. These two fabulous featured poets will be accompanied by myself, Jennifer K Dick, as well as founder of the press and publisher Sarah Lariviere, and poets and artists included in the magazine Christine Herzer and Jacob Bromberg. We promise to make this a lovely, low-key evening of conversation and good poetry. Works from the newspaper by poets who are not able to be present will also be shared.

Check out their past issues while waiting for this newest one to go up!

Note for French readers: Susan Howe's essay that my work is discussing has been translated beautifully and skillfully into French by Béatrice Vilgrain and Bernard Rival at Théâtre Typographique (in the collection DEUX ET) and for anyone who does not know the original English text, it was anthologized in a film studies book in the States.

As for poetry--a new chapbook with Estepa Editions and artwork by Kate Van Houten will be out in Fall 2013. It is called CORRUPTION and a small selection from it will be appearing in the Paris Lit Up magazine and 3 others appeared in Color Treasury 003. So come by the reading and take a peek!

Editor in Chief and founder Megan Garr has spearheaded her team into creating yet another journal of amazing writing and art. It is Megan's energy and talent and commitment to literature that have brought this into this world! I, personally, am really really proud to have been part of those selecting the poetry for this gorgeous issue! THANKS also to the AUTHORS AND WRITERS who contributed work to this issue and to those who keep versal going by SUBSCRIBING, donating and getting issues for themselves and friends--thus keeping that money part flowing!
