SUMMARY of the book below, in French, which Sandrine Wymann and I assembled and introduced as our "Ecrire l'Art" mini residency series came to a close after its 10 year run. But no worries! As this book arrived in our (your?) hands in Sept 2019 we began our second series: Ecrire l'Art 2--taking a new form of inviting a single author to write during multiple expos over the year. The first publications related to this second Ecrire l'Art will appear this June--with a book by Laura Vasquez and one by Vannina Maëstri. Our third EA2 resident, Nicolas Tardy, began his visits to Mulhouse this month and will return in the fall to catch the tail end of the next big show at the Kunst.

Video Readings and Projects

Here are a few links to recent videos of me reading:

1) April 2020: In lieu of reading in Ypsilanti, MI, I made an in-quarantine reading of ASM (Arctic Shield Mission) with background sounds. This is from SHELF BREAK, a manuscript in process. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__KKaL4v2WQ&feature=youtu.be

2) In lieu of reading in Athens, GA at Avid Books, I made this in-quarantine reading of Timber Hitch, a poem which appears in Jacket2 HERE. This poem is also from SHELF BREAK, a manuscript in process. Video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSpWjrk8rbc

3) A reading by my of my translation of the amazing poet Virginie Poitrasson. Here we are on stage for the Paris Lit Up launch in Fall 2015. https://youtu.be/5L8TBT5MplE

4) A snippet from the middle of salon house reading in New Orleans, LA at the end of February, before Lisa Pasold and I set off on the road across the south reading and doing workshops. Filmed by Bremner Duthie. (this gets a bit better sound quality wise towards the end). I am reading an extract from LILITH: A Novel in Fragments (Corrupt, 2019). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVGD0a2yqMU&feature=youtu.be

The Great Launch Kunsthalle Ecrire l'Art 20 Sept 2019

photo: La Kunsthalle.DOSSIER DES OUVRAGES EXECUTES
OUI it's THE GREAT LAUNCH
on 20 Sept 2019:
20h
Soirée Ecrire l'Art.
for our book containing
10 YEARS of
writing extracts,
traces of, remnants of
and recollections of the mini residences of 21 authors!
DOSSIER DES OUVRAGES EXECUTES
A La Kunsthalle, La Fonderie, 16 rue de la Fonderie, Mulhouse, France.

The GREAT launch of the 10 year anniversary volume DOSSIER DES OUVRAGES EXECUTES (éditions la Kunsthalle Mulhouse, distribué par les presses du réel, 2019) from the Ecrire l'Art residency which I helped co-organize over this decade with the art center's director, Sandrine Wymann

Including our "avant-propos" in which we reflect on the experiences of having these authors in to write immersed within the exhibitions, this book designed by graphic artist Jérôme Saint-Loubert Bié brings together works by 21 authors in ways that visually and textually leave a trace of the time spent and the language which emerged during their brief stays in Mulhouse, immersed, each one, in one of the exhibitions at the Kunsthalle art space. Jérôme's creative design makes this a true object-souvenir.

This evening will include presentations of films made of 5 of the authors and their texts, readings by Frédéric Forté, Mickaël Batalla, Frank Smith and Eric Suchère and a reading by the new Ecrire l'Art, mode 2, resident Laura Vasquez, coming to Mulhouse from Marseille.  Why "mode 2"? Because the new format will be having a single author in residence on 4 occasions, for 4 weeks, to accompany the 4 annual shows of art at La Kunsthalle. The author will spend time writing, will meet the public within the space of la Kunsthalle and will also give talks/readings on the UHA campus as part of the partnership with the ILLE labo de recherche partnership. We are all very much looking forward to seeing where the next version of writing art goes!

JOIN us--for this evening of readings, film projections and visit of the Kunsthalle, and pick up a copy of the book while you are at it.

As the Kunsthalle states on the FB event site: https://www.facebook.com/events/726731531120519/

Collectif 2 Documenta film by Gilles Weinzaepflan

For the second time, I was part of a summer collaboratif writing and art project with a set of French and Italian poets. This one, subtitled "Spaghetti Western" or, by me, Documenta, will be publishing various verbal and visual results over the nex months. One of the first available is the film that GILLES WEINZAEPFLAN made. I was honored to be part of the film--both during the final scene at the table and in the role as Veriano--one of the three converts who is martyred--in the black and white scenes here. The presence of the beautiful countryside of Italy and in particular of Piane di Bronzo where we lived and worked together, and of the ever present cats who refused to remain off camera as Gilles filmed, is an extra plus. Check out the film BEATI TUSCANI on Youtube!

Jeff Hilson, Richard Makin and Jennifer K Dick at Tears in the Fence Festival 2014 on What is Experimental Writing in the 21st Century?

New video now up on Youtube of the Oct 2014 "On Tradition and Experiment" round table talk I lead with Jeff Hilson and Richard Makin from the Tears in the Fence Poetry Festival organized by David Caddy and the magazine Tears in the Fence.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vfYKipPhI0
We ask questions like what is our "reponsibility" to tradition, in particular, in the case of Jeff Hilson's topic, to the tradition of forms like the sonnet? What is the relationship between alchemy and experimental procedures as authors and readers? On a more general note, so what is the new? What is tradition or experiment? How did we get to now? What are the limits of language? How are young people writing today inheriting from traditions and what techniques and perspectives are they bringing to the table? Why can we see awkwardness in writing as compelling? Underlying this are the unasked questions, the hinted at query about what space exists today for transformation, opacity, transparency, inspiration, intention, creation, or hybritdity in the new writing and writers of today? Are we, like alchemists, "journeymen of the soul"? Or something far less grandiose?

Jeff Hilson brings in issues on the sonnet and  perspectives on whether explorations of the sonnet can change, sharing some his own techniques as explored in his book In The Assarts (Veer Books, UK, 2010 ).

Richard Makin shares a talk on alchemy that in many ways might stand as a kind of metaphor on transformation. Makin speaks of this hybrid of art and science, of conversion, of transformation, from the dull to the luminous.  Makin also opens up a space for reflection on indeterminateness in reading (and perception), thus the space for reception in the making of art via this talk. For more on Makin's own work, check out his dense poetic novels Dwelling (Reality Street, 2011) or Mourning (Equus Press, 2015--read an excerpt at https://equuspress.wordpress.com/2015/02/09/mourning-2/ )

Jennifer K Dick looks back over the convoluted literary trends of tradition and experiment in the American cannon, the interweavings, the redefinitions, the limits of the obsession with the new and yet the sense that perhaps a new is still just about to arrive once more. Her reflections are based on a series of articles published in Tears in the Fence over the past 5 years.

Let me know what your thoughts are on this talk and our topics! Enjoy! --Jen

JUST about OUT! Benway series Folio 9! PLUS a film by Gilles Weinzaepflan of the VERBERIE moulin rouge poems!

Photo by Alessandra Cava of the BENWAY SERIES 9 folio--feel free to order one of your very own online!
The summer may already seem far far behind us, but one of the loveliest moments for me was the time spent in Verberie near Compiègne at le Moulin Rouge an old marberie (marble mill) with French and Italian poets and artists--Michaël Batalla, Gilles Weinzaepflan, Laurent Grisel, Marc Perrin, Anne Kawala, Andrea Inglese, Alessandra Cava, Mariangela Guatteri, Renata Morresi, Florence Manlik and myself, Jennifer K Dick.

We were drawn together by Michaël Batalla and Andrea Inglese for a week-long intensive communal reflection on writing, performance, etc but also came to produce new writing and also then Gilles made a film and our week ended with a "BOOM" as the French say which we opened wth a reading performance of that work that we had all written and translated during those green, insect-laden days and those fireside reading-filled nights post bbq in the garden by flame and firelight.

AND NOW the first of the publications linked to the time spent together is just about OUT--BENWAY SERIES 9! Presented this weekend at the EX.IT poetry festival and conference in Albinea, Italy!

It has extracts of each of the 10 authors poems --on one side in our native language, on the other in Italian translation--plus a drawing by Florence Manlik (seen in the photo of the folio above) representing in lines the interconnection of the 11 of us. Along one side is also a series of black and white photos by Mariangela Guatteri who is also responsible for the overall layout and editing of the publication of the Benway Folio series.

Keep your eye on the BENWAY site for the official publication announcement if you want to get your own copy mailed to you! http://benwayseries.wordpress.com/ or also keep up with them on their facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/BenwaySeries

For the movie--where each poet reads their extract in their native tongue and the background images and sounds are furnished and produced by Gilles Weinzaepflan, see the film at: http://vimeo.com/101581345
